Product Selector
Description:
Terracotta is a porous material which if untreated will readily stain. Traditionally, Boiled Linseed Oil is used to fill the pores of terracotta, thereby reducing porosity and inhibiting absorption of grime and fluids. This rich golden coloured oil is ideal for enhancing the colour and natural tone of terracotta.
Field Of Use:
LTP Boiled Linseed Oil may be used on medium and high porosity terracotta. Boiled Linseed Oil is a viscous liquid which is not readily absorbed into lower porosity floors. Therefore, to assist absorption, when applying to low porosity terracotta or quarry tile floors, Boiled Linseed Oil should be diluted with white spirit or genuine turpentine in a ratio of about 50:50 (N.B. precise dilution depends on the porosity/absorbency of the terracotta). Please Note that LTP supply a product called LTP Cleartone which is a pre mixed boiled linseed oil/white spirit mix with added drying agents. LTP Boiled Linseed Oil may also be used on stone and slate, though the method of use should be fully understood before general application.
Coverage:
For medium porosity terracotta: 1/2 coats at 1/2 litres per 10 square metres
For medium/higher porosity terracotta: 2/3 coats at 2/3 litres per 10 square metres
For higher porosity terracotta: 3/4 coats at 3/4 litres per 10 square metres
For slate/stone: Depends on the porosity
General Directions For Use:
For medium/higher porosity terracotta:
1. Apply a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil sparingly by brush and allow it to absorb into the terracotta.
(a) If the oil is not completely absorbed within one hour of application:
Use a clean cloth to remove all excess oil from the surface of the tile and do not apply further coats. Allow the boiled linseed oil to oxidise for at least 24 hours before proceeding with waxing. Oil not fully absorbed indicates that the tiles have reached saturation.
(b) If the oil is completely absorbed within one hour of application: A next coat may be applied. Allow at least 6-12 hours before application of this next coat. If this next coat is completely absorbed, apply another coat after 6-12 hours etc until the tiles have been properly treated.
For higher porosity terracotta: Follow instructions above for higher porosity terracotta but apply the first coat of boiled linseed oil liberally rather than sparingly.
For slate:
Using a clean, dry, fluff-free cloth, rub linseed oil evenly into surface of slate. Do not over apply or leave excess on surface of slate.
Please Note
Do not allow any oil to oxidise on the surface of the tile. Remove any surplus not absorbed into the floor within one hour of application using a clean cloth and if necessary, a little genuine turpentine. Experiment on spare tiles to establish the optimum number of coats to achieve tile saturation.
Important:
DO NOT LEAVE SOILED APPLICATION CLOTHS WHERE THEY MAY CONSTITUTE A FIRE RISK, AS THEY ARE LIABLE TO SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION.
Safety:
